*** Dropcaps Macro (shareware version)
(C) 1993 David Cantrell.
This macro is SHAREWARE. This means that you may distribute copies
to anyone you want, and are encouraged to do so. However, the
software is NOT free, and the author retains all copyright privileges.
You are entitled to install the software on your computer for the
purposes of trying it out. If, after a period of 1 calendar month,
you decide to continue using the software, you must send the author 10
UK pounds (cash or cheque), in a form acceptable to UK banks. Sorry -
no credit cards. You will then receive the registered version of the
macro, which includes the 3 fonts missing from the shareware version.
Otherwise, if you decide not to pay, you are obliged to remove the
software from your system, and destroy any copies you may have, such
as the distribution disc and the copy on your hard disc. Please note
that this does NOT apply to the files which are Public Domain (*.TIF).
Even if you decide not to keep the macro, you can keep these files.
What advantage do you gain from paying? You're doing the right
thing, and it helps to keep the shareware principle alive. You will
get the full version, which gives 3 extra fonts, and will get a few
other macros which you may find useful, including an easily remembered
way to insert a NON-BREAK SPACE (when installed as a SmartIcon), and a
quick way to swap two characters (a common source of typing errors).
Both these can be made into SmartIcons. If you supply your address or
e-mail address (Internet only), you will be notified whenever upgrades
are made available, and will be offered special prices on these.
Shareware is a source of much very high quality software, at very
cheap prices. You can get shareware equivalents of most commercial
software, and it is usually cheaper and better. Also, there is a lot
of shareware which is very useful, but has no commercial equivalent,
such as PKZIP. If I receive enough registrations, I will release more
of my macros and other software. This includes:
Configuration changer for MS-DOS, 4DOS, and MS-Windows
Mathematical functions on environment variables in MS-DOS
Arabic typing capability for AmiPRO (graphics font, and typing
from right to left)
later, I will release an improved version which can use an
Arabic TTF
Menu system for MS-DOS and 4DOS
Change to 43 or 50 rows of text in MS-DOS or 4DOS
File finder for MS-DOS and 4DOS
*** Author's address
For registrations, telling me where you are, and queries, please
write to the author at this address. Languages I can understand are
English, French, and Italian (but please keep technical queries to
English!)

*** File list, Copyright, and Installation
The following files are copyright 1993 David Cantrell. They are
Shareware. For details of registration and distribution, see the
later section:
It is advisable to install DROPCAPS.SMM as a SmartIcon. See your
AmiPRO documentation for details of how to do this.
!INSTALL - Instructions for installation, as an ASCII file
!README.NOW - This documentation, as an ASCII file
DROPCAPS.BMP - For use when assigning the macro to a SmartIcon
DROPCAPS.DLG - Dialogue box used by DROPCAPS.SMM
DROPCAPS.DOC - Documentation to be read from DOS
DROPCAPS.SAM - Documentation to be read from AmiPRO
DROPCAPS.SMM - The macro
DROPCAPS.STY - A suitable style sheet
The following files are Public Domain, and the identity of the
author(s) is unknown:
BAUER-?.TIF - BAUER dropcaps
ELZEV-?.TIF - ELZEV dropcaps \
LARCOM-?.TIF - LARCOM dropcaps | Registered version only
MORRIS-?.TIF - MORRIS dropcaps /
BAUER.BMP -
ELZEV.BMP -
LARCOM.BMP -
MORRIS.BMP -
GARAMON?.TTF - Garamond Truetype font (serif). Used in
DROPCAPS.STY, and looks better than Times New
Roman!
If you want to use the DROPCAPS macro, these files should be put in
the C:\WINDOWS\AMIPRO\MACROS directory:
DROPCAPS.DLG
*.TIF
BAUER.BMP
ELZEV.BMP
LARCOM.BMP
MORRIS.BMP
DROPCAPS.SMM and DROPCAPS.STY should be put in the same directory
as your other macros,SmartIcons, and style sheets. DROPCAPS.BMP goes
with your other SmartIcon. The Garamond TrueType font family should
be installed on your system via CONTROL PANEL.
*** Compatibility and disclaimer
The macro has been tested on a computer running MS-Windows 3.1 and
AmiPRO 3.0, running in 386-Enhanced mode, on a 486DX based system,
with a Cirrus graphics accelerator (1M video memory). The host
operating system (on which Windows runs) was MS-DOS 5.0 and 4DOS 5.0.
It worked when tested. However, Windows and AmiPRO are very complex
pieces of software. Having tried the macro using various style
sheets, I have found that it works correctly with some, and not with
others. This is due to the curious formatting the style sheets apply
to some text styles. The style sheet provided, DROPCAPS.STY, should
work correctly with it, and contains all the styles you should need
for most uses. If your configuration is not compatible with the
macro, you may experience some difficulty. Although the macro has
been as rigourously defined as is possible, I can not be responsible
for any faults. Although the macro is not meant to perform any disc
writes, I have to put in this boring disclaimer: THE AUTHOR CAN NOT
BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LOSS OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT OR DATA
ARISING FROM THE USE OR MISUSE OF THE SOFTWARE.
*** Distribution
If you want to distribute the shareware version of the macro,
please do. You are positively ENCOURAGED to spread it around.
However, when it is distributed by commercial organisations such as
(but not exclusively) shareware libraries, the maximum copy-charge
which may be levied is 7 UK pounds, or equivalent in local currency.
It must be made clear that any charge made is for the disc and time
taken to copy it, and not a payment for the software. It would be
appreciated if any distributing organisations could write to the
author to tell him where they are based, where their customers come
from, and how much they charge for copying.
As with other shareware products, you are ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN from
distributing this package in any modified form. This prohibition
includes distributing it without documentation for Windows and DOS.
*** How to Use it!
The macro can be run either from the Tools/Macros/Playback menu
option (which is a bit of a drag). If you install it as a SmartIcon,
life becomes much easier. For instructions on how to do this, look at
your AmiPRO manual or read the Help file entry (its under
Smarticons ... Saving as a New Icon in the Help file). I suggest you
use the DROPCAPS.BMP file for the icon. (It looks like a letter 'A'
in a fancy font.
To run the macro, place the text cursor just before a letter, then
click on the macro's icon or run it from the menu. You will be
presented with a dialogue box. Then, simply click one of the letters
displayed in the dialogue box. The letter in the text will then be
deleted, and replaced with the same letter, but in the font you
chose.
(The shareware version of the macro is fully functional, but only
includes the BAUER typeface, which is in the bottom left of the
dialogue box. If you choose any of the other typefaces, you will be
told that the typeface is not available.)
The DROPCAPS letters are stored as graphics files, so are also
available to any other program which can import .TIF files.
